60Patrol

Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help me out. I had my transmission completely gone through recently. 4wd Products in Australia has bearing/seal kits for the Patrol and since my transmission/gearbox was leaking like a sieve, I decided to have everything gone through and all bearings/seals replaced. It worked in a sense that it stopped the leaks; however, now the Patrol pops out of gear while driving - mostly 3rd gear. So, I took it back to the shop and Jerry is going through everything again. He said that everything looks normal, except there is excessive play between the synchronizer and 2nd/3rd gears. He's not sure what is causing this. Like a dummy, I threw away all of the old bearings that were removed and replaced by those from 4wd Products. Below is a picture of my transmission gear assembly for the 2nd/3rd gear. It was taken from the transmission shop this morning. There is a ton of play between the two gears - the synchronizer moves about 3/8". He did say that the synchonizer ring was quite worn - unfortunately, there's not a replacement available for that - at least as far as I know. I didn't drive it a lot before taking it in, so I don't know if this was a pre-existing problem or not.

Any thoughts or ideas?

If the 3 teeth on the Synchros Ring are worn this may be the cause. They can be found from time to time on www.amayama.com but its hit or miss. The other option is to have a machine shop braze some material on them and then reshape the teeth. Also make sure that the springs and ball bearings were put back into the Synchros assembly. There should be 3 each of those.

how did I get so lucky for you to respond? Glad you did. I think Jerry's patience is wearing a little thin, but this is extremely helpful. got onto the amayama website this morning. it was my lucky day. they had 3 of these in stock. It looks like I need 2 to do the job. Its always good to have a spare, so I ordered all 3. bad news is that it is shipping from Dubai - so another 2 week wait..... But, at least they had the part.

Awesme! Glad it worked out. If you the come in sets of 2 and you have a spare set I will buy one from you. Mine were a little rough and I had them touched up at a machine shop but I would like to have a spare set just in case.

Sounds good. Also I was looking at the parts diagram there is a Thrust Washer, Part # 25, that may have excessive wear. That could be the reason for some of the slop. You might try to get the measurements off of it and see if you can find a replacement that's a little thicker and see if that helps.
