60Patrol

Hello all! I got this 1969 patrol about a month or so ago, and I have finally freed up my shop to roll it in. going to need a good amount of work, but I was told that it was running when parked....several years ago. Anything I should check to make sure it can crank right up first time?

Take the spark plugs out and pour some Marvel Mystery Oil or Seafoam on each cylinder trough the hole (maybe 3 or 4 table spoons). Let it sit for a couple of days and with the plugs still out, turn the engine with the hand-crank or with the aid of the starter to make sure everything is moving ok. You don't want a stuck piston ring suddenly moving at 800 rpm or more.

You'll be ok. These engines are very robust.

One additional thing you have to make sure is that all the parts inside the oil filter are there. Sometimes people are not careful enough or at the typical shop that do oil changes, and they can loose some of the parts or an O ring. The end result is that the oil will bypass the filtering media altogether.

Rusty fuel tanks, lines, etc. seem to plague many at this stage.
Using a remote fuel can, mine fired right up after its 25 year nap.

Im similar to flaggoni bypass it with a remote fuel can, and started right up after sitting 15 years

before actually starting it up i want to double check the fuel tank, possibly replace if need be, clean or replace the radiator (full of gunk), redo the brake lines/brakes, and redo the clutch line. also, where can I get brake cylinders and shoes from? I found a company in australia on ebay, but I think the brake cylinders are no longer available?? is there an interchangeable part in the US?

mdawg, thats in Tuscumbia and im about 1.5 hours east, in Huntsville.

I purchased brake shoes and brake cylinders (front and rear) from 4wd products in Australia (thru ebay). Their brake shoes and cylinders are good matches. for the rear cylinders, you will need to do a modification to remove some material underneath the small steel plate where the shoes ride, but other than that they work great. There are several posts which detail this. If you need springs, you can get rear springs domestically from HGM forklift parts. Front springs are harder to find. I was lucky and found a set on a Datsun forum. Also, the rear brake cylinders have little tin clips that hold them in place - they sort of float. If you need these, HGM also has them from time to time (part number NI44113-30100 and NI44142-30100) and they're a bit expensive for what they are, but they work great (They're $3 or $4 apiece and you'll need several for each side).

The parts manuals are also posted and I refer to them often. Each part seams to be a treasure hunt.
