Shock Question

Bottoms out? Shimmies? Shackles, springs, shocks, steering linkage etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Suspension' category are here.

Shock Question

Post by Redpatrol7760 »

I had pretty much decided on OME shocks and steering damper but continued looking for other possibilities. I came across some Fox 2.0 shocks that have similar measurements for extended and compressed to the OME. How close is close enough when considering shock travel?

Fox is 16.05 extended and 10.95 compressed.
OME is roughly 17.5 extended and 10.7 compressed.

Thanks!

As long as your spring travel doesn't cause your shocks to hit the stops at either end, no problem - that will depend on spring height and rate, standard or extended shackles and bump stops, whether the front travel limiters are in place, etc - just jack each end up and measure the required maximum shock length at full droop and then work out the minimum length when you hit the bump stop in compression, allowing for the bump stop to squish up a bit.

The manual suggests standard shock absorbers have a 180mm ( 7.09" ) stroke.

If the Fox shocks have "eye" mounts instead of the Patrol's stud mounts then a set of fabricated - or purchased - stud-to-eye mount converters ( others on the forum have done this ) will effectively lengthen the shock and also eliminate the problem of bending the lower studs when negotiating rocks, logs and other trail litter...

Thanks for the info! I think I'll stick with OME since they are a better match and I don't want to fabricate anything I don't have to. Thanks again!
