Rear Axles Bearings Possibly Needed
Greeting O Gifters of Nissan Gold,
CCV4 may need replacement rear bearings. I want to use it in November so I prefer to source the bearings around here, if possible. So if anyone has a spare set of extra rear axle bearings please let me know, if you are willing to give them up.
It seemed to drive fine while we were driving it but when King Kong Craig opened it up to insert Christian's Lincoln Locker rear gears he said the axle was so loose it was "knocking around" and the rear gears were just touching on the tips.
Unless this is normal, I will likely be looking for bearings. King Kong says he will let me know Tuesday.

You may be able to source theses yourself. Take a look at the Compatible parts list: http://parts.60patrol.com

If memory serves me right, these bearings in the compatible parts list will work, but they are smaller width wise and will need spacers. I believe thats what we ran into when Esteban rebuilt his rear diff.

Thanks Ron for that reminder. Here's the thread that describes what the problem is with other bearings and how to solve:2869ral wrote:If memory serves me right, these bearings in the compatible parts list will work, but they are smaller width wise and will need spacers. Please note that the original carrier bearings are unobtanium ! They might be still available in Colombia. It looks like they were only used in these Patrols.
The axles in fact are always touching at the tips inside, but you shouldn't have axial end play of the axles, except for what's call in the specs.: 0.002" to 0.006" (0.05 to 0.15mm). Since you are dismantling everything the differential to swap the carrier with the "Lincoln locker", you can check the conditions of the bearings at this time. Hopefully they are still good.L60Boerne wrote:....It seemed to drive fine while we were driving it but when King Kong Craig opened it up to insert Christian's Lincoln Locker rear gears he said the axle was so loose it was "knocking around" and the rear gears were just touching on the tips.

The axial play is corrected with the shims that you place between the axle housing and the wheel bearing cage (the one with 4 bolts on the back of the brake plate). Since you have to compensate for wear, you always end up taking shims rather than adding them, so you'll have to play with the thickness of the shims you have. The Service Manual has good instructions on this.

Re: Rear Axles Bearings Possibly Needed
Thank you Ron, Esteban and RiverPatrol. King Kong Craig will be able to make use of your timely responses. I did consult the CPL but it does not specifically say they will work on a 65. It seems to say 67 and other year models and I have bought so many parts that don't fit I wanted to wait for your responses. If the bearings in the CPL work then please consider changing the comment to all models between 60-69.

Re: Rear Axles Bearings Possibly Needed
Powertrain components on all US Patrols are (mostly) compatible. The only change on the rear axles I can recall is going from a left hand thread lock nut to a right hand thread nut, around '67.L60Boerne wrote:Thank you Ron, Esteban and RiverPatrol. Re: Rear Axles Bearings Possibly Needed
King Kong Craig is a real mechanic. Now, he prefers a serpentine approach which means he starts upstream and gets everything perfect before he tackles the issue you asked him to fix. Having said that I am so glad he moved into our community. When he is finished his work is equal in craftmanship to Rafael's gear, brake and axle work. So CCV4 (Presidio Patrol) is now getting mechanically rebuilt for the third time in 2 years. When he is finished he will have rebuilt everything added last year plus finally rebuilding the rear axle while adding the Lincoln Locker from Christian.
You may recall, when I bought Presidio Patrol I immediately left it for 9 months with a garage in Alpine, TX. That shop was charged with completely rebuilding it except for paint. The only thing he actually did was charge me for the work but did not perform it. After we picked it up from Alpine it was nothing more than buckets half filled with water and body parts. The Alpine mechanic claimed to have mechanically fixed everything before sending it to paint & body over the preceding six months. After getting it back together the second wave of mechanics starting upgrading the ignition, carb, wiring harness and panel gauges. That was about six months. Then after that round was not satisfactory (it just didn't want to start, eventually it would but something was wrong) we turned it over to King Kong in August after he finished CCV5. Since August the only thing that hasn't been pulled out is the front axle and motor block. He has rebuilt the transfer case, clutch, transmission, carb, pulled and replaced the Flame Thrower ignition system Rob lined out for us with a new Flame Thrower ignition and coil while rewiring everything.
So until King Kong pulled Presidio Patrol's rear axle apart I thought it had been inspected or fixed as needed by the Alpine crook. Anyway, I suspected he lied, thus my request for King Kong to check it out.
Now, King Kong Craig doesn't break things or poorly install equipment like the other mechanics around Boerne. He gets his name from the fact he a trophy American meaning if African animals came over here hunting for large size examples of our species to mount on their wall they would want King Kong Craig. At 6.5" and almost 350 lbs he really doesn't fit into a Patrol so other have to test drive his work.
So, we have asked King Kong to finish by Nov 1st. He has sourced all the gears, bearings and seals in the USA so it can be done.

Re: Rear Axles Bearings Possibly Needed
Hi all,
L60 Boerne, I let you know how much your post means to me. As I said rarely do mechanics get a simple Thank you, let alone a post about it.
To the rest of you out there, my "Serpentine Approach" is as a result of 35+ years in the automotive industry. When I perform a service of ANY sort I keep my eyes open for other issues. On more than 1 occasion in my experience I have seen vehicles return for repairs because the cause of the damage was not identified. For instance, on L60Boerne's patrol I was going to install his Lincoln Locker and found extensive rust, corrosion and debris in the housing. If I had just done as he wanted, the differential would have broken in the near future. I found other issues as I was repairing this Patrol. They have been or will be addressed as I progress.
PS: River Patrol
Hows the weather out there? Big Bear is where I spent 18 yrs, I miss it but where I am now is almost as good. I left BB in 04 to travel and see America. Many of the 4X4's in BB were customers of mine.
