VZ 42 lost idle

Greetings,

CCV5 was running perfectly. After a hour of slow, rough and tedious grinding up and down limestone trails the motor lost its ability to idle and produced a faint backfiring. It restarted quickly. It never overheated or even showed to be much more than 155-60 degrees. It was in low speed and mostly in 1 and 2nd gear through the trails.

It seems something rattled loose. If this is common then I need to learn how to fix it on the trail.

Any help would be appreciated.

As I recall you were having problems with one of them running too rich? I don't know if this is related to your current problem but one thing to be checked is that the vacuum port is available and oriented correctly on the carb base insulator. This very well maybe the root of some of my problems. I know the Rochester on the 65 didn't get this cut out. Ok, does this also apply to my 63 with the Hitachi VC 42 as well?

In addition to RiverPatrol's comments, I will take a look at the slow jet. Most probaby got clogged. Very easy to fix in that VC42 carburetor, since it's accessible from the outside. Any minor debris that passes will clog it. I borrowed the following picture from Pancho's thread and highlighted the location:

Yes, this applies for the VC42 as well.

I would also check points gap. Unless you've gone electronic.

Thank you both, I'm proud to say I've got the Rob Moore electronic upgrade on both. I'll have Eddy disassemble the Rochester on the 65 and the Hitachi on the 63 because I'm sure neither has that cut out.
