carbuerator compatability: VHA//Rochester

Hi everyone,

Question about compatibility between carburetors. My Patrol currently has a Hitatchi VHA carbuerator. The salvaged 67 that I have has a Rochester. Wondering about the compatibility between these two units. Are they interchangeable? Any experience on which one is more reliable? I suspect the linkage is different, but my linkage is tired currently and needs to be gone through anyway.

I'm not familiar with the Rochester, but it was fitted to the USA Patrols as standard equipment. Since you have the donor parts, the linkage shouldn't be a problem. You probably will have to do something with the neck of the air filter housing to match the Rochester, or hopefully you have that from the donor as well. Could be a good test.

I use to have the Hitachi VHA in a 74 years ago. It had a little more power than the Hitachi VC42 of older Patrols, although fuel economy suffered. What I never liked is the plastic cam that actuates the accelerator diaphragm. It tends to wear and cause a flat spot during acceleration that drove me crazy. At that time it was easy to get a new cam that lasted for enough time, but today it will be impossible to source. Maybe 3D printing can solve this issue.

Since the engine I purchase from member Natron37 in PA came with the Rochester, and he had serviced it with a new kit, I'm going to give it a try and compare notes with the Carter YF that I'm currently using.

Thanks Esteban. Sounds like a good science fair project and I am curious about the end results While my axles are off getting repaired, I think I need to pay some TLC to the carburetor and linkage. That can get sorted without the vehicle having to move.
