66 Patrol

Post by CBlake »

Hi everyone-

It's been a while since I've posted any updates... In fact, my Patrols haven't been on this site at all. I was active on RMP-O for a while and when this site was starting up, I was losing interest in Patrols and my focus shifted to other projects. I have since been working on my original Patrol and trying to get it finished.

Here is where it started...
This is my first Patrol. It's a 66 that I found on Craigslist in January of 2011 because I was looking for an old Land Rover to work on. I like the unusual, so this was perfect. I paid $600 for it and he was asking $1200. I have since found out that I got a really good deal. Of course, I didn't know it then because it had been sitting out in a field for approximately 20 years. Someone had started taking it apart and had all the pieces inside. I think that's why the chrome stayed in good condition. Turns out, this Patrol was very original and still very solid with just surface rust primarily.

I got the engine running again and licensed and back on the road. That included converting to a 2 barrel carb and many many more repairs and upgrades.

Then it was time to make it a little prettier. I sanded everything down and coated it with some self-etching primer. After working on the top, I decided to send it out. The bottom 2 inches all the way around were rotten and needed to be replaced. I got that put back together and got to meet up with another member, Butch. at an off-road park in southern Missouri in November of 2011.

I tinkered around on it over the years and drove it occasionally, but it was never done. This winter, I decided it was time to finish it. I got new interior in the original style, but I wanted something different so I did a nice tan interior.

That leads me to present day. I did body work and finally got it painted. A buddy of mine is a painter and we got it done over a weekend. I had him spray 3 coats of clear so we will be able to cut and buff better. The red is the original Pagoda red and the top is the original white. We did do base/clear rather than a single stage, though.

Now I'm putting it all back together. I still have to do the underside and paint the engine, but it coming along nicely. I got the rear all finished including the original interior panels.

Anyway... I'll be posting more pictures as things get finished up.

Thanks for looking!

For sure! You went deeper on yours than I did on mine. Did you do base/clear as well?
