Generator and LEDs
I've got a '66 Patrol that is running with the original generator. A question has been posed as to whether the generator would be able to handle the addition of some LED off-road lights or if an alternator should be installed in its place.
I understand LEDs have low draw but would the generator be able to handle the extra output? The parts manual says the generator is a 12v - 200w capacity.

Re: Generator and LEDs
For years, while still having the generator I had the same challenge, but with the typical incandescent lights available. That's why I switch to halogen lights for the main ones, since I couldn't add auxiliary lamps. One can do the count on every electrical item being used like:
High beam lamps: 110 W
Marker lights: 6W x 4 = 24 W
License lamp: 10 W
Dash lamps: 8 W
Ignition system: 48 W (typically 3 -4 amps at 12 volts)
Total: 200 W
Not too encouraging!
The wattage is taken from the owners manual, except the ignition system. I always new that they draw around 3 - 5 amps.
If the sealed beams are replaced by LEDs, it will be 60 W total instead of 110 W. That will give you some 50 W to play.
