Rear axle backing plate knowledge needed

Hello,
I’m working on the 66 rear axle and during disassembly I found the backing plates to be in different locations on the right and left sides. On the right side, the plate was between the bearing cup and the axle flange while the left was between the cup and the axle tube. I have been unable to determine which is correct. My guess is plate should be mounted outside the bearing cup as to not interfere with the shims. Any help is appreciated. -Steve

Thank you, I’ve been amazed by his thread but still not able to find the answer to my question.

It makes sense that if the backing plate delete doesn’t cause a spacing issue for those going to disc brakes then it’s probably supposed to mount outboard of the bearing cup. It’s almost impossible to tell just by looking at one, even up close.

I hoped the picture would help. There are a couple of active projects right now with lots of axle pictures but they're both converting to disk. So you have to dig real deep into he threads to find pics of the axles pre-dis. The one on the left in your picture is the correct way. The other will cause an offset in the placement of the shoes in regards to the drum. The shoes probably show the uneven wear.
