60Patrol

Is there any sure fire way to know if the front drive train is engaged?  I just bought a 1969 patrol and I am still figuring out the 4x4.  I locked the front hubs, put into 4x4 drive; but it seems that it is still in rear 2 wheel drive.  However, I did manage to get it into low gear.  The manual says that the low gear can only be engaged while in 4x4.   Any tips and/or suggestions.  I don't want to tackle some heavy duty terrain thinking I am 4x4 when I am really two wheeling.   Thanks. 

Find some loose ground and test it out. On a dirt road, my rear end will slide with a little effort in 2wd, 4wd hangs in there and pulls. A small mud hole always helps as well.

Raise one front wheel and one rear wheel on supports and put the car in gear, and see if they move while the engine is running. Both should. Since there are no lockers on the Patrol, it's safe to do this test. Block the other wheels for safety.
