Hi Guy I am in the process of cleaning up the 66 engine and repainting it. I've completed the passengers side and now working on disassembling the drivers side.
I was working on unbolting the exhaust where it bolts to the manifold and snapped the front stud of about half way. The rear Stud undone easy and no problems. Now I got the exhaust off and Manifolds unbolted and will clean the engine up in the following days. I will need a new exhaust for rego, any way so it doesn't matter who removed it was going to snap.
So what do I do know the original manifold is in good condition except the snapped bolt, and the one of my 77 is stuffed with a Capital 'S'
I reckon take it to the exhaust shop get them to drill it out,tap a new thread and re-stud it
Mike, if you know how to use a torch. You can put some heat to the manifold around the stud while unthreading it with locking pliers. Do not heat up the stud, just the manifold around the stud. try the penetrating oil that Esteban recommends first! If that doesn't work then go to the heat. Good luck.
also, try loosening a little bit, then turning back opposite, and just keep working it back and forth. the heat does work, but we always cooled everything down before turning the stud or bolt to keep from gaulding the threads.

Buy a center punch and cheap tap a die set if you can't coerce it out. You need the set anyhow and will cost the same as someone fixing this one problem. Grind it flat, center punch, drill undersized, ream out some new threads. If you dont have a drill press lay it on some plywood and hold it by stepping on it and drill straight. Good luck.
