Changine out diff pinion, cheap and Cost free ?

Gday all, Just wondering what is involved in changine over a front diff Pinion ?
In my brown 1972 G60 It has collapsed pinion bearings in the front diff when i got it, when in 4wd it would bind up. So since i have had it its been a 2wd G60, Time has come, andnow i want to change over a spare pinion with the bearings on it, whats involved in doing it, and i dont want to spend any money on new seals Ect ?
I know you need to pull the axles and the centre out but not sure the next jobs after that or which sequence to do it in.

First thing is first
Don't want to spend money doesn't work like that
Secondly highly recommended to replace seals once diff is apart,a lot f$&kin easier that having a leak and having to pull it apart again.
Thirdly must understand the terms float and play,and know how to adjust properly otherwise you are wasting your time and will damage or destroy the diff,knowledge and mechanical experience highly recommended

Michael, I agree with Ferdy regarding the seals. Since you have some potential donor vehicles, you can do this repair without much trouble.

If there's another one of your Patrols that you are confident that the front differential gears and bearings are good, what you need to do is just swap all the contents from one, to the other. Or, swap the entire axle, which will be a fraction of the time and cursing.

I've done in the past this swap two times, in two Patrols. In my case, the rear differential gears were worn and making noise. Since both front and rear differentials were the same (we don't have the heavy duty pumpkins here ) I just changed everything from the front to the rear. By doing this, you don't have to worry about the correct setup of the ring and pinion, since you're not altering it. But this is only if if you change everything including the bearings and the shims in the same location.

Specifically you have to worry about not damaging the shims under the bearing cup of the pinion.

I changed bearings on the rear differential a few months ago. I need to do a write-up and post some pictures. One of the problems that I faced was the lack of the proper bearings for the carrier, and how if solved the problem.

Agree completely with Swerve and Ferdy and Esteban -

If cost is the primary concern, then just find a front axle assembly that works, and swap them out. that will be way easier than trying to match together a different pinion to your existing ring gear.

Rebuilding a differential can not be explained in a forum post. I have never known anyone who got it right the first time by themselves - I've known a couple beginners who gave it a try, and ended up destroying all their replacement parts in less than a month because they adjusted it all wrong.

a first time differential rebuilder should have a knowledgeable mentor watching over them every step of the way.
