Help removing clutch / bell housing

Won't run? Engine, cooling system, fuel pump, carb, clutch, tranny, brakes, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Engine & Mechanical' category are here.

Help removing clutch / bell housing

Post by ckhorne »

Help! I was able to remove the engine (+ clutch + transmission + transfer case) out of my patrol for some cleaning / maintenance / replacing all gaskets, but I'm having trouble figuring out how exactly to remove the clutch / bell housing off the engine.

I've seen a few people mention that you need to remove the thrust bearing first, but I'm not sure what I'm looking at or where to start with that. The manual says to remove the bolts for the flywheel, but that doesn't appear to help.

Can someone help? Maybe with some arrows or something on my pictures to get me going?

I messed up taking mine apart -- unbolted the clutch before removing the throwout bearing and shaft. Everything got wedged in place. Sure would have been nice to have the bell housing bolts on the OUTSIDE of the bell housing!

Anyway, the trick is to take the throwout bearing out and extract the shafts that it rides on. Here's my bell housing looking from the inside outward:

Here's the "Remove the clutch assembly" section from the manual --

Before you take it apart, can you take a picture of the safety wire and what it wraps?

Good luck!

Ahh - that picture from the inside makes it much more clear! I haven't been able to get a good view from underneath - I'll take a look at it tomorrow.

And - yes - I'll take some pics of the wires before unwinding them - Thanks!

yeah inshort nothing needs to be unbolted.

You can jiggle the clutch throw out bearing down and out, I did work out a procedure, but woudl need to serach for it. But once the bearing is out, you can unbolt the flywheel, then bellhousing

I agree, i was able to get mine out without unbolting it as well. :)

I went to take a picture of the wires around the retaining bolts, but the amount of gunked up mud / grease is amazing (since the previous owner didn't re-install the clutch cover).

I saw this message, and decided to give it a try first. I was able to get the throw out bearing out with a bit of wiggling.

However... when you say "unbolt the flywheel" - where exactly are you doing this? I found several large bolt heads (18-19mm?) around the main shaft, between the engine and the flywheel, but they're almost impossible to get to. Are these what I'm trying to unbolt? If so... are they left hand thread? Mine won't budge.

The flywheel can be unbolted thru the open end of the bell housing. To keep the motor from turning, use a small piece if angle iron about 6 inches long to lock the teeth of the fly wheel with the bell housing. Using a long extension, you should be able to break the bolts loose. You will then have to break the bolts loose on the bell housing. Good luck.

I finally got everything apart. Now that it's apart, it's fairly obvious and straightforward...

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this. After 2 hours of scrubbing everything with degreaser and a wire brush, I can now actually see the individual parts. Remember, the PO removed the clutch cover and never put it back on, so I had what seemed like 10 lbs of caked in mud and grease inside the housing.

And... after everything is off... there are no safety wires on my assembly. I'm happy to take a picture of the naked retaining bolts, but my picture would look just like yours...

You know, I was going to start a collection of clutch arm retaining bolt pictures, but now I'm pretty worried that such a collection could get all-consuming and I'd end up wandering from shop to shop, breaking in at night just to capture those pics... It's probably better that I avoid it all in the first place! ;-)

Just kidding! Thanks for remembering! I think we can pass on the pic of the wireless bolts.
