Won't run? Engine, cooling system, fuel pump, carb, clutch, tranny, brakes, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Engine & Mechanical' category are here.

First Drive...

Post by profsr »

Ok. Got the patrol on the road and drove it for the first time ever. Really exciting and exhilarating. Harder than I imagined, this thing is a beast. Will.post some pics soon as I have to resize them first.

A few quick question:
1. What is the correct position of the transfer case gears? I don't think I have mine set properly. Although I drove it on the highway there was quite a bit of noise coming from the front directly underneath the shift levers.

2. 1st and 3rd Gears grind when shifting. Why?

Cheers.

Exciting, and barave! They can be quite a beast to drive when everything hasn't been loosened up in decades.

The left transfer shifter should be set to 'High', pulled towards the seat; the right transfer shifter should be set to 'Rear Drive', forward towards the firewall. Make sure the front hubs are unlocked also.

First gear doesn't have syncs so it will grind unless you are at almost a complete stop. Third shouldn't grind, you may need to double clutch when shifting.
Beyond any hope for intervention

Awesome. That is the way I had them set up. The left lever sid not have an N position as shown on the shift decal. That is why I was concerned.

Also sounds like loose marbles when the clutch is disengaged. Noise goes away as soon as I depress the clutch pedal ever so slightly. Any thoughts?
