Sniper EFI Installed. Runs and drives perfectly.

Post by dustybaird »

I posted my sniper setup in my build thread and it was requested I start a thread about the EFI for others.

We really wanted a Sniper system and when we saw this was released we felt it would be a good fit so we decided to just buy one and see what we could do.

This is the one I used. Single barrel, and only needed the mounting holes slightly enlarged to mount right on.

And I used this fuel kit.

Enlarging the mounting holes. Just went slow and made sure we weren't hurting anything.

Test fitting

Hooked up and running. Started right up and idled perfectly. After driving the only thing I did was adjust the target air fuel ratio. It was running a little rich, once leaned out it runs perfect.

Image

We wanted to use the oil bath filter still for the right look. We had to add a small spacer seen here to get the height right. We gutted it and found a round paper filter that fit in.

Image

Will eventually find a black piece of silicone for it to blend in more.

Image

And engine bay as it sits now.

Image

Replaced fuel tank with one for a CJ jeep since the oem had some pinholes. Here shows the fuel pump setup.

Image

And the sniper computer. We found an existing dash hole and bolted the mount to it. You can move it to glovebox easily if wanted. Only factory gauge that doesn't work is the fuel gauge so we through another one in since I don't want to run out of gas.

Image

I will get some videos soon of it starting and driving. Any questions let me know and I will answer the best I can!

This is awesome, thank you! I'm going to move this to the Tech section and sticky it. :)

It seems you have provided a modern step forward for the L60 Patrol with one of the hardest to fix issues for mountain operation. The existing naturally aspirated carburetors are good...but EFI is better. Thank you.

Unreal! Thank you for stepping us through it. Seems so simple now.
How did you find wiring it up?

Thanks for posting this Dusty! (I was going to hit the "like" thumbs-up but for some reason it's disappeared for me :?: ). I hope you will occasionally provide updates on drivability and any issues (hopefully none!) that you have.

Congratulations on your effort! Very detailed. Thanks for posting it.

The Sniper computer panel has readouts for ignition timing. How does it get this? Do you have to install any additional sensors?

Fantastic. Thanks for posting.

I'd be interested in what the fuel economy is like?

Also did you need to change the accelerator linkage?

I was watching YouTube videos on the Sniper EFI just the other week thinking it could be perfect for the Patrol. Awesome to know that it's so plug & play. Just how much of a daily driving improvement have you noticed with it?

This is the exact system I was recently researching for my 65 build... I will probably get around to building that truck (and ordering one of these systems).. Oh, in about 2030 at the pace I'm going

Thanks so much for posting this info... this is a perfect option for these old Patrols.

I'm reading up on this because I continue to have carburetor issues and think this could be a great alternative. In looking at this, Holley offers a line of gas tanks with internal pumps; however, they don't offer one for a Patrol. I like dustybaird's approach of using a Jeep fuel tank with an external pump. I doubt the pump will be noisier than the rest of the Patrol that surrounds it.

Another alternative - which I think gets to Esteban's question about timing, is the ignition system (coil and distributor). Holley offers one that is compatible with the Ford 6 cylinder. I'm not sure if it could be adapted to fit the Patrol. Anyone have any ideas around this? I was going to reach out to them, but thought I would reach out to this group first.
