I'm finally getting to investigating why there is bearing metal in my rear differential. Disassembly showed the bearings in good order so perhaps the metal was left over from a previous disaster in the 1970s (I bought the truck in 1980). At any rate you can see that the inner race spun and damaged the gear housing. it is not so bad that we cant stake and green loctite a new bearing. Speaking of unobtanium carrier bearings, I had two in my inventory no I don't have any more but will save the old bearings and inspect them. Pinion bearings are readily available. Note the -X designation on the outer race of the carrier bearing. Other pictures show the general state of the disassembly. I will update as the rebuild progresses.

gear carrier with spun inner race, fixable w/loctite

carrier bearing, inner race is standard part #

Beware, outer race is a -X part unique to the Patrol, hence the unique part problem

Yes I ordered these in 1987 from a dealer.

Toads Patrol was right when he mentions that the ones in the Patrol are unobtanium. The key issue here is the 32209 J
X. The bearing cap as he mentioned is unique to the Patrol with that X. A few years ago in 2013 I scouted every vendor of bearings, and none had that. A member in a now defunct forum, also confirmed this years ago.
I was only able to source them in Colombia, but the vendor at that time was clueless on how he could send me the bearings. That's when I decided to place spacer shims on the outside of the cap. I have clocked 4000 miles now, and everything is ok.

what does the X designation mean?? I see that on a lot of bearings.

is the outer race thinner? what does it measure? searching 32209J i come up with 45mm X 85mm X 23mm, but I see some others that are 20mm wide with a different letter designation. I also found that on ebay there are some bearings that are listed specifically for the C216 axle for the 61-69 patrol.

just did some additional forum searching and found where they were talking about using GM spacers. they showed and spoke of the narrower outer race but they never gave any real dimensions. Most of the 32209J bearings show a cup of 19mm. i have found a Koyo bearing that is 32209JR that is 23mm but when I search the specs of 32209JX I come up with 24.75mm. by searching "32209 24.75" I have found some bearings again on ebay that show up as 45 x 85 x 24.75. would these be correct size?

That is the same thing that happened to my rear end. Mine tore the shim up so lots of end play, hoping my ring and pinion are good.
