Those are good old carbs at least from my one experience. The rebuild kit is simple if you can find one. Two internal moving parts and a few gaskets. Mine ran perfectly.

BTW, the description of your problems could be attributed to a vacuum leak as well. Remove and plug the vacuum line to see if it makes an difference. Non chlorinated brake cleaner can also be used to check for leaks around the base of the carb.

There is not much else to check. Fuel level, fuel mixture and idle speed. I usually set the fuel mixture needle for the best idle (highest) with a preference for slightly lean.

Thanks all. Right or wrong, I’ve sent my Rochester B carb off for a rebuild and hopefully that will cure my issues related to backfire, stutter, engine dying at quick stops.

I’m officially sick and tired of my Rochester B carb. Would like to replace with a Hitachi VC 42 or NAPA ND 1495, but can not find any available.

Any guidance on where I can source a new carb?

Did you ever check the vacuum advance on the distributor and make sure it's connected and working properly? The vacuum line connected to the carb should connect to the vacuum advance. Also depending on which distributor you have there might be 2 other vacuum fittings, if there are they are not connected to the air cleaner as they should be. This can all contribute to performance issues. The stalling at an idle can be as simple as adjusting the dash pot at the carb.

Thanks River. I will recheck vacuum hoses/advance. I have recently added the carb isolation plate with cut outs for two breathe holes in the carb base plate. Patrol runs ok, idles ok, but still runs rich (I can smell gas), plugs foul and gas mileage is <10 mpg.

Well, the gas mileage seems about right. I think I used to get between 9 and 13.

One thing to look at while you're checking things. With the engine running spray some WD40 around the base of the carb. If the idle changes at all by doing that it indicates there is a vacuum leak. I don't know where you found the insulator block but the correct one has gaskets on it already and additional gaskets shouldn't be added. The height is important as well.

Good call on those vacuum hoses RiverPatrol. Mine never ran smooth until those hoses were reconnected to the air filter housing.

I did not use any additional gaskets. I did carve out two slots to align with the two holes in the bottom of the carb. I will inspect the vacuum hoses and will do the WD40 test.

That's a good compatible part to add to the list. It looks like it would work for the VC-42 carb as well.

Esteban, I’m warming up to buy the Patrol carburetor (Carter knock off) you mentioned in this post. I saw the link for links, thanks, but also wanting to know what other modifications will be needed to replace the stock Rochester B. I’m assuming fuel line hook up will need to be adjusted. What about insulator, air cleaner, other?
