I have removed the spark plugs and added Marvelous Mystery Oil in each of the six cylinders....temporarily re-installing the plugs as the mystery oil does its thing.

Tomorrow, I plan to lift each tire to see if they are locked or not and check the fuel line from the gas tank to the front to see if there is any blockage.

I have ordered a WIX Filter 51302 to be here Monday via Amazon.

I have sprayed lube into the ignition switch a few times over the last 36 hours....so far, the key still doesn't seem to want to turn. I will wait this out while I complete some other tasks recommended by all of you.

I have a fire extinguisher next to my work area ShowMe!!!

My next questions are:

Are there any other filters (AIR) easily ordered on Amazon? Or, at least, easily found that work. (AutoZone, Napa)
Are there specific NEW spark plugs to re-install once I let the the Marvelous Mystery Oil do its job? (What spark plugs do I need?)
I don't have an original hand crank bar....Is this something to easily overcome to test the ability to turn the crankshaft manually?
Is there a prefered "Fluid" to fill the radiator with? (What is best to fill this up with before a first start?)
I may be being lazy without googling this one, but what does this mean.....????? "Grease the water pump if a zerk fitting is present on the top of the water pump"

I spent some time with a wire brush, compressed air, and a shop-vac to clean up some areas that a rookie could handle today. The Patrol LOOKS better each day! A little less rust and dust.

As always, thank you all for your advice. I have been impressed from day one by your kind use of time and patience.

I will post more photos as it makes sense with our progress!

On a slightly different note: I noticed there a few members on this board from Tennessee. (As am I .....Nashville) When I get this one running, we should all meet up....or at least exchange information) 67NissanPatrol67, delbert, tnpatroler to name a few that I have noticed!

Key. I should have mentioned that there may be a number stamped in very small print on the ignition key and also on the ignition lock (you should see this - no need to dismantle). The numbers should be the same! There may be a number on the fuel tank cap as well. Not sure about door locks. If the numbers of key and lock match then the key should open the lock.

Some keys have been re-cut and some locks replaced so the number may not be there. Or the lock/key may just be worn out.

There is not a number on the key, but I am confident that the key is probably not the original. This truck was inherited from her Father and Grandfather who have both passed away. The grandfather had owned a couple of car dealerships including Volvo and Nissan/Dautsun, so I think it was probably a trade-in or bought at an auto auction and kept in the family if it was recognized as in good condition at the time. She remembers riding in it with her father no more than 12-15 years ago, so I know it hasn't been sitting dormant for 40+ years.

I (think) I can replace the ignition and get a new key made if need be, but let me ask you all this:
In my experience with manual transmissions, the clutch needs to be depressed in order to turn the key. If (as I stated before) the clutch does not feel like it engages anything when I step on it. If I do have the correct key, but there is something wrong with the clutch, would this effect the ability to turn the key?

I just don't want to swap out the ignition if the clutch is the problem.

Can you turn the ignition switch on a Patrol if the clutch is not engaged?

Very few parts will be found at all the normal places. The air filter is a permanent one, doesn't need replacing. You can find a fuel filter at a parts store.

The spark plugs that you want are NGK BP6ES. These can be found at any parts store or Amazon.

If the fan belt is tight enough, sometimes you can move the engine slightly by pulling the fan belt between the engine and the alternator. Or you can get a large crescent wrench on the nut of the lower pulley and run it that way. Not much room down there though.

Just put water in the radiator for now.

Your water pump won't have the zero fitting because it is a later style pump.


The clutch and ignition are not connected in any way. I'm pretty sure that you just don't have the correct ignition key. I have not seen an ignition switch stick to the point where it won't turn at all even after lubing.

Pretty much what every one else has said. Don't get the little car jackstands, as you now own a 4,000lb piglet. That could also be the pushing issue if you're used to imports. Rust on the drums can cause some drag, but if it was locked up you wouldn't have moved it at all. Some wheel cylinders may be stuck so don't reef on the brakes until you can get the drums off and check. oh getting the drums off
The clutch master cylinder is probably dry, and somebody pushed the clutch in. Now the cup is stuck forward, may be salvageable, may not.
The knurled nobs are choke and throttle. Cable to the top of the carb is choke, other is throttle.
I'm off to push the dead commuter into the driveway, don't know when my next day off will be.

Going to be driving to Omaha from Nashville for Thanksgiving (12 hours ;(), so the Patrol is going to have to sit tight for minute.

Again, thanks to all of you for your advice. I will get back to tinkering when we return.

In the meantime, check out what a rust-remover bath and a wire brush did to the defrost vents and a few spots on the dash!

Looks great so far! As Nizmut stated, the drums can be a bear to get off. I spent more time getting mine off than with any other item on the Patrol. Good luck!

We just finished a trip to Omaha, NE for Thanksgiving from Nashville, TN. (Not in the Patrol) ...12 hour drive...
The story I have is simply that my fiancee's dad and grandfather had this Patrol before she got it. The "Patterson" name on the dash is from the fact that the dealership the Grandfather owned was of the same name.

Hopefully I will get a chance to work on it a bit this weekend.

Again, I truly appreciate all you who have offered advice and guidance. Still excited to keep moving forward on the project! I anticipate more questions soon, and thanks to all of you all ahead of time for your time and answers!
