Rear axel

I pulled my drivers side rear axel out and it has a heavy steel sleeve and it about 6 inches from the bearing. Is this normal or did someone fix a broken axel this way. the axel is not solid. the two sides on either side of the sleeve turn independently from each other. they are tight in the sleeve but will turn. What is this all about? I hope someone out there knows about Drivers side rear axels. Paul King

I just rebuilt my rearend,there is no sleeve on my drivers side axle,I broke my drivers side axle about six inches from the bearing too.Sounds like someone broke an axle.There is a nut on the inside side of the bearing so the axle will not come out,but it could spin in the sleeve.You could probably weld the sleeve on the axle,if the axle is'nt aligned perfectly it might vibrate on the highway.The heat from welding might make the axle brittle.I think I would try to find another axle. Sorry I don't know of any axle's,you might consider swaping to a landcruiser rearend.There are aftermarket parts available for the landcruiser rearend like lockers,disk brakes,stronger axles.

Trying to adapt another axel or even replacing the entire rear end is a pain. It really is easier to find another Patrol axle. I went through this same exercise last year. Try to contact Matt Ryan, verdikids@worldnet.att.netHe is parting out several Patrols. I got two left and one right axle from him. Early axles have a right hand thread, my '69 has a left hand thread on the retainer nut, so get the nut with the axle. Gary

If you want to fit a stronger axle shaft into your existing rear end, check out Dutchman Motorsports in Portland, Oregon. They make custom alloy axle shafts for off roaders and racers. It probably won't be real cheap, but it beats the effort of changing axle shafts, towing, potential damage a broken shaft could do all the time. http://www.dutchmanms.com David

I was watching/looking at this discussion, and wanted a bit mroe information. Did Nissan make their own axles-is that why the difficulty in locating one? How hard is the Landcruiser one to adapt? I know they have similar offsets, so what is different? Spring perches? Is there a similar DANA model to try and alter to fit? I just discovered that my '67/'68 that I bought, which had the drive-shaft out (I assumed for towing), is missing the part of the shaft that goes into the rear diff itself. The diff hole is simply open, and the shaft has only the four-bolt connector to attach onto whatever should go into this hole. I suspect they blew the rear end on it. Thus, I am trying to track down a rear end for it and I would like to look at one and see what exactly I am missing. My IH's don't have a set-up like this!!! Anyway, any information, or leads on another Patrol to even look at or get parts off of would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks! Michael

there is a flange on the drive shaft that mates up to the flange on the diff. takes 4 bolts,nuts,washers. if that is gone they you need to call that guy that sells parts in new mexico it's on the patrol club home page and then look for one. mark.

Yes, I am apparently missing the flange that goes into/on the diff. I have the shaft with a flange on both ends, but the diff simply has an open hole in the front end of it.
