Ammeter Replacement?

Won't run? Engine, cooling system, fuel pump, carb, clutch, tranny, brakes, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Engine & Mechanical' category are here.

Ammeter Replacement?

Post by GARYSCC »

Hi, this weekend I fixed many of the wiring issues with my Patrol. I have found that my ammeter is broken - which isn't too surprising considering the melted wires I found throughout the mess of speghetti I found. Does someone have an ammeter for sale?

I'm actually now ready to start up the patrol - but I hesitated to try it until I drop the gas tank and check if its clean or not. And, I'd like to squirt some penetrating oil into each spark plug socket just to give it a little extra lubrication - its been sitting about a year now.

Gary you can always pull the fuel hose off the hard line in the engine bay and drop it into a bottle of "gas" to get it running.. Then after you've flushed the tank you can hook it back up and pull the hose off the carbie and drop it into a bottle and let it crank over to flush all the crap out of the lines.

I bet you're looking forward to firing it up!

Gary, until you find the replacement ammeter, just leave everything connected to it, or worst case scenario, join the two wires and cover with insulation. At least you'll be able to make everything else work.

I wonder what the damage is to the ammeter, since the ones in the Patrol are extremely simple. It's just a needle that magnetically reacts to the flow of current between the two terminals. No internal coils or anything else.

From what I could see in a picture from your engine bay, are you running an alternator? If so, the ammeter is no so critical, since voltage control is what's needed for the alternator, and a volt meter is a must. With a generator, it's critical to control the current output and then it's when the ammeter becomes handy.

Hope you'll find the replacement soon.

Yes, I did just as you mentioned. I hooked up the (+) and (-) wires together on one side of the ammeter in order to get power to the car. The ammeter i have won't allow any power to cross it. I have it set up to easily adjust once I have a working ammeter. I think I could I have the one I have rebuilt once I get to that.

Gary

The wires to and from teh Amp Metre are using shorted together if the loom has been overloaded.

If this is the case they could be shorted and the amp metre will not work. I'm with Esteban, not much to go wrong.
