60Patrol

Hi Guys, The 1966 G60 is Running very rough lately. I'm not Sure what the Problem is or how it was caused, but below is a list of what's been going wrong with it lately.

- I Originally Tried to keep the G60 Running and start it at least one or Twice a week, however when I removed the front guards to install the news one I had to wait 3 weeks for them to arrive, and couldn't start or drive the 66.

- Prior times the 66 G60 has ran like a champ, but just before I started to remove the guards I took it for a Drive and something strange happened, it was running good then all of a sudden the engine would slow down and run rough, so a little rev and it was fine again and ran smoothly.

- Once I got the guards on and went to get it out the garage It was running very rough for some reason. I had recently painted the Carby so I though paint may have blocked up a hole inside the carby,and being a Stromberg Carby I though I could use the one of the 79,however the Mixture screw was in a different spot, so I made a carby from both. Bolted up the custom carby,and the g60 started and ran to like with no visible flat spots.

- Sunday 4th AUGUST 2013

I needed to get the 66 out the shed for some photos with the new bumper and that fitted, I had to fill the bowl of the carby by undoing the top and pouring fuel in to fill it up and some down the carby,it fired up but was running like a Sick Dog to say the least, and when I went to rev it to see if it would it wouldn't do it just nearly stall and I could hear air sucking, and luckily the old girl made enough torque and struggle to pull its self into the shed in low 4, and had the choke open half way

Any idea, as I need to get it going awesome again. When i accelerate there was also no fuel sprayed into the Venturi ?

Well it definitely sounds like carb problems, accelerator pump and possibly a vacuum leak from what you described. Good luck.

Yup, if you don't see a small fuel spray when you hit the accelerator, then that is most likely an accelerator pump issue. If you are hearing the air sucking sound, then I agree with 2869ral's idea that a vacuum leak is another good thing to look for (and eliminate).

All of this is assuming that the basic carb components are clean and in sound condition- float level is adjusted properly, needle and seat and metering assemblies all move freely, etc.

It also wouldn't hurt to hook up a pressure guage on the fuel line going to the carb and make sure you have adequate fuel pressure going into the carbie (5-7 psi or ~35 kPa)... if fuel pressure is low, then look for clogged filter(s), clogged lines, or a clogged pickup screen or tube in the gas tank, or a bad fuel pump diaphragm.

I don't mean to sound like a Figjam, but why did you paint the carb? Carbs really like being bare metal, and a carb can never be "too clean" - the cleaner they are (inside and out), the better they work.

That, and the gaskets on the carb need to be sealed - a carb with leaky gaskets will never hold an adjustment for very long, and will always give you grief.

if none of these suggestions bear fruit, then move on to the ignition system- make sure you have a good spark in every cylinder, and that your points are clean, and they they are opening and closing properly.

You'll find it... just remember that it is all a system- everything has to work with everything else, and one poor player can spoil the whole symphony...
