Fuel Tank Restoration

Post by BJA »

Dropped the fuel tank and have begun to restore and clean her up. I have been using a electrolysis method for the last week to try and get what rust I can out of the inside. This weekend I will further clean and seal the inside with the POR 15 kit.

Good stuff. I'm keen to hear how you go. My tank is causing me grief at the moment!

That's an interesting method to use. Can you provide more detail?

Your tank looks to be in pretty good shape.
Beyond any hope for intervention

The electrolysis method I used was to mix 1 tablespoon of washing soda (sodium carbonate) per gallon of warm water. Fill the tank with this solution and then suspend a piece of rod iron in the tank, you must insure the rod does not touch the tank. Then connect a battery charger on trickle charge to the tank, positive end on the rod and negative end on the tank. Every day you need to remove the iron rod to clean all the gunk and crude that builds up on it. It is a great method.

I put a couple hand fulls of clean pee gravel into my tanks with half a gallon of cleaning solvent then and did a whole lot of shaking. Worked real good.

Alternatively, put a long chain and shake the tank. Removing a linked chain may be a bit easier than shaking out gravel.

Getting the peewee gravel out was not a problem. It did work really well. If I remember right it was a old duffer that gave me that advice.

zed, just noticed your in Plano, Texas. I have a couple aunts in Plano. I'll give you a shout when down there some time in April or May?

I've been thinking that a new tank might be easier that trying to restore the existing one. Our tank has been lined to protect the fiberglass patches that are on the fiberglass patches covering the rusted holes. ;-) At least the tank's shape is pretty simple so how hard can it be? Here's what's inspiring me anyway...
