Won't run? Engine, cooling system, fuel pump, carb, clutch, tranny, brakes, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Engine & Mechanical' category are here.

Bellhousing to motor separation

Post by Sketty123 »

Hi, I have a 1972 G60 patrol with the P40 motor and 3 speed gearbox, the current issue I am having is my clutch is not working despite multiple attempts and so I am trying seperate the bellhousing from the back of the motor so I can take the clutch plate out however, I've noticed there are no bolts (that are visible) connecting them. I'm presuming its dowel that holds them together but I am still unable to get them seperated and I'm wondering has anyone done this or knows how to please?
Cheers Sketty.

Hi Sketty123,

The bolts are actually inside the bell housing, you have to slip a spanner in there to remove them...I'm not sure whether you have to remove the gearbox from the bell housing first necessarily, sorry I can't remember clearly as I had already removed the box...I have a feeling you do though...

I've previously ranted about this design, it's one of the few things I don't like about the G60 P motor...not sure if the G61/MQ P40 setup had a better design but I'm guessing yours is a P since you've got the 3 speed behind it.

The manuals on this forum may help too.

Cheers,

IMHO you need to rmove the tranny, clutch and flywheel, to get at the bolts behind the flywheel. I was diassembling my engine completely so i did it thatway . i don't think you can get a wrench in there at all....

That rings a bell, no pun intended...

Sorry, it has been a while since I was doing that, thanks for the correction.
