Decided to start my attempt of building a disc brake setup for my patrol. instead of using some Nissan parts I have decide to use Toyota parts. I was planning to use a spare set of 4 piston calipers from my 1993 4runner and I have the old rotors from my 1977 Land Cruiser. But the LC rotors bolt the the back of the hub as do the 1993 4runner but somewhere in late 90's the went to a rotor that slips over the top of the hub. I have made a couple brackets over the weekend that will be my starting place. I used a piece of 3/8 flat stock that is 6 inches wide and bored a hole in the center.
I have not drilled bolt holes yet as I do not know the orientation of the caliper yet. I have trimmed down the back side.
I had to clearance the hub a bit on the outer edges at each lug stud to let the rotor drop over the hub.
Then I had to open the lug holes on the rotor to 19/32 and use my dremel to open the rest of the way for desired fit. The next size drill, 5/8, would have been larger than I wanted.
It is nice to finally have my 1967 home where I can use it for testing and planning. I built the carport last summer and brought the patrol home from the farm late last year.
I took the spare wheel off this morning to test fit the rotor and caliper for clearance. It looks good to proceed.
The back side of the rotor and the outer surface of the spindle are about the same so now I need to create the radius on the other half of the adapter. I could have used a rotor that has is shorter but that would have put the caliper deeper in the rim and would hit the rivits on the rim without the use of spacers. This rotor is about 3 inches tall the land cruiser rotor is only 1.5 inches but would not allow for any clearance.
Went out and picked up some one inch stock earlier to make an adapter for the adapter.
I was about to do some cutting and shaping and I began thinking about the land cruiser rotors again. There is about 1 inch difference between the LC and 4runner rotors.
If I use the LC rotors I can bolt directly to the back side of the adapter. But the 3/8 plate I started with would be a little too thin for a 1/2 bolt. Guess I will remake the adapter plate out of 5/8 plate. The LC rotor bolts to the back of the hub so I had to open up the center hub hole and the bolt holes.
On a side note the spare tire weighs about 70 pounds! It feels like the tube might be filled with something, but nothing that moves or shifts? I might have to drill a hole in the side of the tire and see if anything comes out.
just ordered more parts to do some test fitting. Caliper for the land cruiser rotor and then ordered a thicker rotor that matches my 1993 4Runner calipers I had on the shelf. I also found through some research that the rotors for a 2001-04 Rodeo might be just the right thing. The first attempt I was using a rotor from a 1996-2002 4Runner that was 2.78 inches high, this put the back side of my rotor at the same height as the adapter plate I was making. I then tried my old 1977 land Cruiser rotors that are 1.89 inches high. this moves the caliper down into the rim and likely to hit on the rivits in the center of the rim and will require the use of spacers. The 1993 4Runner rotor is 2.59 inches tall but has the potential of being too deep to allow clearance on the adapter plate without making clearance cuts on the adapter plate. I am not opposed to doing that, the other option would to be to run a quarter inch spacer under the rotor between the rotor and hub. i think there is enough thread on the lug studs to support that idea. I will be picking up these parts tonight to do some measuring and planning before I start making modifications to the actual parts... the take a dim view on crediting modified parts!
