2024 NSW lithgow trip

Post by RED DOG »

Hi all, been a while since the last post, as usual we're all busy but I thought its about time to put some words and photos together of our 2024 New South Wales, Lithgow trip.
Having been able to get out again in 23 to Victoria after the crazy flu pandemic, the boys were all keen in 2024 to get out again on another 60 trip, but this time somewhere different was on the cards, not that there is anything wrong with the Victorian high country, but a change of scenery would be a nice change, in 24 we decided we will head north into basically what could be described as the new south wales high country.
Heading west from Sydney over the blue mountains and onto the great dividing range, parts of NSW highest elevation.
Leaving my house in western Sydney we headed up the highway, Cos and myself in the blue 79 ute, Michael with his 77 tub ute, and Ross Collins with his well travelled 68 ute, first stop was Maccas (mcdonalds) in the town of Lithgow, being the first "country" town to the west of Sydney it served as a great starting point for the trip.
There we met with "Puggy" not a member here, and also Peter60.

8925
8926

After catching up with everyone and having some breakfast, fuel tanks were filled and we soon set out for our first bit of dirt.
We took things slow for a while as we were still waiting for Lawrence in his mid wheel base to catch up, running behind due to traffic up the blue mountains... we decided to make our way on some short side tracks which headed down to the Cox's river, we soon found ourselves in the thick of it and some steep hill climbs were in front of us which caused some quick wheel lifts  and that's where we had our first problem, one of Ross's front engine mounts decided to quit and with the torque of the motor under load going uphill, the engine fan was grinding away at the shroud making a horrible noise, but in true Ross fashion he kept on trucking, opting to fix it later that night in camp.

8927
8928
8929

Breaking out the maps we decided we better find somewhere to camp for the night, there were a couple tracks making a kind of loop which lead down to the river, we thought we'd take the easier route for now as we were starting to run out of daylight, but not too far down we encountered some big wash outs and the boys weren't too sure if we should proceed as there was a long drop off to the right, if something went wrong there wasn't much stopping you, with words of encouragement from Cosmo I decided I was going to give it a crack, as camp was only another few hundred meters down the track and reversing uphill from where we were was also going to be a hard task in itself, as usual the photos don't do it justice.

8955
8931
8930
8932
8933
8934

Upon arriving in camp we were greeted by some other campers who clearly knew we were coming as they could hear us for a long time coming down the mountain with engines breaking for us under compression and exhausts crackling and popping, aswel as the classic low range gearbox whine  they were more than happy to share a fire and couldn't believe their eyes when we all rolled in with the old rigs, a few beverages that night around the fire telling stories and having a good laugh, we didn't go to bed until late so Ross's engine mount fix was left for the morning

8936
8935

Below is a very happy but tired G60michael
8937

Up and at it the next day we headed up and out of camp on top of the ridge.

8945

Bound for a well known hill climb called "fire truck hill" those that are interested to see it can look it up on youtube, its not far out of Lake Lyle, anyways according to the maps we could either cross the Cox's river there or go up fire truck hill, well we couldn't do either of them, the river crossing was deep! and well over 100 meters wide so there went that option, the hill climb proved to be steeper than what we seen online and Puggy in the soft top shorty wasn't keen as a roll over would have certainly meant death, also there was another group of cars attempting the hill and we waited for atleast half hour and they were making little to no progress and resorting to winch from less than half way up!
turning around and heading up another track which would eventually lead us to the main highway and out to another section of country, found us battling a hill climb which was almost no better than fire truck hill, there were dirt bike riders who were turning around half way up, we managed to get the blue 79 ute up with minor issues, Michael, Puggy and Peter also, Lawrence in the middy was next followed by Ross, unfortunately about half way up Lawrence had a brake failure in the back left wheel! the wheels spun on a loose section and so he went to stop the car and have another go but the brakes had other ideas, quick thinking he tried to select reverse gear but no good, managed to pull the handbrake but by that time the car was gathering speed, as last resort he turned the steering and stopped side ways to the hill, hitting a tree in the process but luckily there was almost no damage and no one was hurt.
Just weeks prior Lawrence had the g60 front diff fully rebuilt including brakes front and rear, but the mechanic had no knowledge of how to work on the g60s and how the rear wheel cylinders work, well long story short there was too many backing shims on the rear cylinders so they were not able to float and centralize in the slot and so the shoe adjustment was way out and the piston of the wheel cylinder actually popped out!

the call came out over the radio for help, realising how serious the situation was we made our way down the hill on foot with some tools and parts in hand.

8939

Upon getting the car fixed and brakes bled, still poor Lawrence's confidence was shattered, I could see he wasn't in the right frame of mind to drive such a hill after what just happened so I volunteered to drive it for him, my adrenaline was pumping! never having driven this car before and no prior experience behind the wheel of a mid wheel base, my heart was pumping out of my chest, I remember selecting first gear and giving it a few revs, then I remember being 3/4 of the way up and the car leaning to the right hand rear and seeming to want to keep on rolling over but quick shouting words from Michael through the left front window told me it was just a rut and I was almost through it, easy for him to say at the time

later looking at the pictures and from what the boys told me, I was actually up on 2 wheels at the time! no wonder it felt bad in the drivers seat  :eusa-pray:

8940
8941

Out of trouble now we were soon onto the black top and headed for Sunny Corner state forest, from there we found our way through private property and onto The Pinnacle fire trail, which runs along the ridges towards the Turon national park and where our camp would be for the night.

8942

Before too long we found ourselves in some more mischief with rutted out sections and some mud holes, Puggy couldn't help himself as seen in this shot

8944

Michael followed suit in the same style but unfortunately I didn't get a snap of it as I was trying to record video and stay dry
So here's a more tame version, but needless to say both cars drank a bit of water through the air filters, which saw Mick washing out the mud from his paper filter in the river later that night and hanging it next to the fire to dry before bed

8943
8946
8947

Not too far out from camp we came across this steep section, some careful navigating and instructions from Mick and we were all soon down onto the flats, with mobs of Kangaroos trying to race us to camp

8948
8949
8954

Camp was at a National Park designated spot called "the diggings", which is in the Turon national park, lovely area with drop toilet and well maintained grassed area and fire pit.
Dinner and drink was well earnt that night from the days adventures.

8953
8950
8951
8952

Well that's all for today folks, that's just the first couple days of adventure with still the rest of the week to go! The g60 in my shed is calling to be worked on so time to go, but I sure hope you've enjoyed the read so far! happy to receive feedback as this is my first "out and about" story I've written so I hope I've told the story as well as G60michael has in previous years.

cheers all, RED DOG :animals-dogrun:

Wow, great write-up and fantastic pictures. As G60michael says, we are eagerly waiting for the next installment.

This is some pretty extreme Patroling, don't think I would attempt that! It is amazing to me, however. how well the Patrol suspension articulates (I think that is the right word).

Another Aussie road trip, how awesome! Thank you for this wonderful rendition of your trip and incredible pictures. I can't say I've ever seen a Patrol on 2 wheels. :o I can't imagine what it was like in the driver's seat. Very impressive how well equipped all of your Patrols are, you're ready for anything. Can't wait for the next episode!

Wow, you guys really know how to live! And you are all fabulousls rich as you can afford to paint your Patrols after you get them running. They all look great and I hope I get to do something similar some day. We do plenty of off roading but we always come back to a house or permanent camp of some sort.

Thank you for the pictures!

I hope to have a three Patrol Patrol of the 06 Ranch mid next month. Two at least. Actually three Patrols will be on the ranch, I'm just needing an experienced third driver.

Well done for the Patrolles down under!

Thanks for the comments much appreciated, yes we certainly test the capabilities of both driver and Patrol
I did try to resize the pictures for the next post, hopefully they appear better.

We were up fairly early the next morning, the boys were commenting about the lack of brakes coming down the steep hills the previous afternoon, thinking the mud holes and dust the day before was a contributing factor I wasn't too worried, but while some people were still packing up their beds and gear, Peter thought he'd just quickly check out his rig which was fair enough.
Soon Pete set the scene and he rolled out a big tarp, tools layed out and random large rocks made great wheel chocks.
Before too long there was a queue of patrols lined up for Pete's mechanic shop
We all chipped in and lent a hand where possible, wheels were off, drums were cleaned up, shoes adjusted up nicely and test drives around camp... or rather doing hot laps and brake test skids

Anyway before too long we set off, we were meant to head back up the pinnacle fire trail that we came in on but due to the ruts and the time it took to come in, we chose to head out another way, into a local town called Capertee where we could stock up on small supplies and fuel, there was a bit of water to cross again and some great photo ops.

while some of the fellas drained the service station of fuel the rest of us waited across the road in a rest bay, a farmer from up the road stopped in rather abruptly, and ran over to us only to be the nicest fella you'd meet, turns out Brett also owns a patrol or few and offered us a guide around his place if we had time, and even offered spare parts if we were in need, with phone numbers exchanged we shook hands and parted ways.
Back on the black top now we put pedal to the metal and made our way over to a place called Sofala, we were meant to get there earlier that day but from the other route over the fire trail, we made it with daylight to spare and shocked the locals as all but one of the patrols rolled into the sleepy town, Ross came over the hill so fast he didn't see one of us waiting for him at the corner and sailed straight through
Anyways crisis averted we got a hold of him and he made his way back, a beer or few with the locals we all had a great chat and also being a 40 series Landcruiser enthusiast I couldn't keep my eyes off this beautiful LX BJ42

Talking with the locals and aware of the fact we were headed over to the historic town of Hill end the following day, they advised us of a great free camp spot not far out of town, parked on the river rocks right next to the water it couldn't get any better.

8980
8981
8982

Well we thought the spot couldn't get any better, but the following morning we were woken to a crisp chilly air, and not long after having the billy boiling for a cuppa we heard a strange noise coming our way, 2 horses slowly fed their way through camp, it was a surreal experience, before long they left us with coffee in hand as we watched them cross the chilly water of the river, belly deep, the warm rays of sun shine soon covered the cliff face and the bleeps of a feral goat was heard.

With full bellies and the mornings pictures taken we set off for the historic gold rush town of Hill end, settled in the 1860s it is now looked after by the National parks and wildlife service, with originally more pubs then you can count on one hand there is only one still standing and open for business, but the pub was for later, first we went to explore what's left of the town on foot, it was great to see the restoration of these historic buildings taking place and with small boards of information in front of most places it helped you piece together what the town originally looked like.

after finishing our lap of town the pub was calling, a couple beers and a rather large feed was on order :obscene-drinkingcheers:
we opened up the map and got some directions from the bar maid for the historic "Valentine mine" not far out of town, she also mentioned to head just around the corner and check out the old hospital, there we found an array of old equipment including horse drawn carriages, steam engine tractor etc

9030
9031
9032

9028

Gold first found in the area was back in 1851, but the mine was established in the early 1860s, sinking shafts under ground was by hammer drilling and blasting at a rate of 6 to 10 feet per week, in August 1863 two mining partners went down to 175 feet, the spectacular crushing through the battery returned 61oz of gold from 10 tons of ore.
In 1866 which was a particularly cold and wet winter followed by very hot summer, convulsions, diphtheria (respiratory infection), scarlet fever and other diseases spread through the area and took their toll on 33 children under the age of 10, a death toll of 43 people for that season.
Information is a bit vague but it seems the mine was shut in the mid to late 1930s.

Once there at the mine we were greeted by a rather large "hole in the ground" and just meters away an old "stamper" which run off a belt driven steam engine, it basically pounded the oblivion out of the rock which was mined to extract the gold, just up the dirt road we also found "Cornish quartz roasting pits" made in around 1855 they served as large ovens to burn the rock into a crisp, which made it easier to then smash the quartz with the "stampers" or by other manual means

9010

The roasting pits below

9013
9012

A great bit of history there, it was great to see and have a sense of the land and how the miners worked.
Coming back through Hill end we weaved our way through town and started the historic and famous "bridle track" although not a physically hard track to traverse these days, you could appreciate how hard going it would have been back in the gold rush era of the 1850s, the track originally built as the main route for miners and settlers between Bathurst and Hill end, it gained its name for the narrow sections cut into the side of the hills, in which travellers would have to guide their horses by the bridle.
Now a popular tourist route, scenic views and great camping by the Macquarie river, we were starting to run out of daylight so about half way along the track we came across "root hog" reserve, a well known great camping spot, but to get there you had to cross the river, at times it can be quite deep with fast flowing water and not advisable to attempt, but that night the waters were rather calm and around chassis deep which made for a great entry to camp and a great photo opportunity :D

Camp was quickly set up and the fire was lit, everyone's vehicles were performing well with only minor issues with both Michaels and Ross's ute's, a bracket holding the exhaust pipe on Micks car broke at the weld, a quick fix with a strap on the side of the track did the trick temporarily, while Ross had a "quick change exhaust" no matter what the boys did over the past few days the damn thing just wouldn't stay attached, it was as if it was cursed  another fix was left for the following morning, tonight we all sat around the fire and relaxed, cheers everyone! :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Now on the 5th day of the trip, light had hardly broken for the day and Michael was the first person out of the swag, I assume he just couldn't sleep and must have been itching to get back into the drivers seat to explore some more country for the day
As most of you know he has a keen eye and can find a g60 almost anywhere, but today he spotted this wild Fallow deer trying to sneak its way through our camp.
We were certainly well practiced by this stage on camp assembly and disassembly and it wasn't long before everyone was up and making noise, the deer didn't hang around too long :naughty:

9036
9035

With enough daylight now we broke out the tools and got to fixing the 2 broken exhausts, mind you Ross's broken engine mount was still in fact broken and he persevered with it all this time, we did use fencing wire, rope and ratchet straps to hold the motor down so it wasn't going anywhere and wasn't a safety concern, hats off to the guy, he just kept on trucking!

9037

With cars fixed and gear packed we headed up this very short side track before lining up to cross the river.

9048
9047

With the Bridle track now finished we headed into Bathurst to fuel up our tanks, grab supplies at the "boating- camping & fishing store" and grab a nice hot shower.
while in town we grabbed a bite to eat at "Maccas" again, and Michael called up a local who he had been in contact with recently, Mark lives in town near the world famous race track of Mount Panorama, Mark now owns his fathers old g60 ute, who bought it new back in the day, he's kept it all original apart from the wheels and the Marks 5 speed gearbox, Mark was available to meet us and offered to guide us around the track, how good is that!
We had to get a pic on the starting grid of course

9051
9049
9050

with the "hot lap" around the track completed we parted ways with Mark and decided to check out the motor racing museum, unfortunately we got there with only about half hour before closing time so we had to rush through.

9053
9054

We really left there too late, we were going to try and make it to a camp ground at Lithgow in the "Gardens of stone" national park as that's where we were exploring the next day, but part way along the "Great western highway" we realised we weren't going to make it at a reasonable hour with time to make camp and cook dinner so we tried to stop at Sunny corner state forest, same place we were other day to start the Pinnacle fire trail, but with darkness set upon us already, and the timber loggers blocking off tracks and bee hives everywhere we couldn't find a suitable camp site for the night, exhausting every corner of the pines we were in, everyone was tired and hungry and just wanted to settle down for the night.
Lawrence then gave us the idea of pushing on through just a bit further up the highway to a kind of council park land that he's visited before, Lake Wallace was probably the best decision we all made, but cold weather and tired eyes, everyone hit the swags pretty quickly once we were all setup and fed.

(sunny corner, below)
9052

(Lake Wallace below)
9056
9055
9057

With it now being the 6th day of the trip we only had another couple days to explore before having to head home, Friday morning saw us leave Lake Wallace and head back around to Lithgow where we started from earlier in the week, basically so far we did a big loop, topping up fuel in town we headed back North-north west for the small town of Ben Bullen, entering the bush there we came across a few national park rangers who were putting up a gate across the track, apparently for "public safety" when there's wet weather

We asked them about track closures in the area but they denied knowing anything, so we set off for Baal bone gap picnic area to have lunch and from there we were meant to cut across to another area which would lead us to camp for the night with things to see along the way, but not far down the track we came across another couple rangers and apparently the track was closed further up  but we could get to the picnic area ... this meant we would have to double back almost all the way into Lithgow...what a stuff up, but nothing we could have avoided with the info we had known that morning.

9060
9059
9061

After lunch at the picnic area we headed back out the same way and back down the highway
Taking the "Ian Holt drive" exit off the highway near Lidsdale we headed back north again on the Wolgan road, not too far up the road we were back into the area we wanted to be and were soon exploring ancient Aboriginal cave paintings at "Black fellows hand cave"

9063
9070
9062
9064
9065

A truly great place to visit, you could see why the local Aboriginals of the day would have come here, with so much clear fresh running water and shelter during heat or storms, a little ways down the track we navigated our way through these rock formations, awesome spot for more pictures... can never have enough pictures

9066
9067

As was the theme for the week, there always had to be a hurdle to conquer just before camp  as seen with this hill and ruts, of course what goes down must come up? or something like that the saying goes right?
Michael, Puggy and myself had a go at this "little hill climb" they made it up but I didn't, I had 3 attempts but called it quits as we were running out of day light and needed to get to camp so I chose to take the left track which everyone else did, it was alot easier but still not without a challenge

Obstacles navigated we made camp, Bungleboori camp ground made for a great spot to base ourselves for the next 2 nights, under the pine trees and on the door step to many great tracks to explore.
Friday night everyone's spirits were high, a roaring fire with great weather, clear nights sky to see the stars and mixed emotions of anxiety and excitement for Saturdays activities

9109
9110
9113

Saturday morning arrived all too quickly, we had barely gotten out of bed and got ourselves organised when Matt arrived, Michael and Matt had kept in touch over the past few days and Matt was keen to come up for the day with his dad as co-pilot, travelling about 4 hours to get there he certainly was putting in an effort to be there.
We all swarmed around his little short wheel base 60, it was a very clean and tidy car, but we had a little concern for the original side steps, with what punishment we put our rigs through the day before we didn't think the steps would survive long before being bent up, but Matt was confident "they'd be right"
so we did the done thing and lined up all the cars against the pine trees for a group picture.

9114
9111
9112

Thought we would ease into the days activities we ventured out to look at "Lost city north"
not far out of camp the track went from sandy soil to a mix of rock and sandstone, a little bit slower going but the view when we got there was just spectacular!
Years ago you could drive right down to the point on the cliff but these days authorities have blocked it off and a short walk from the car is needed.

9115
9116
9117
9118

Back in the cars we headed back the way we came and took a left turn, we were about to enter the "power line" track, obvious to the name high voltage powerlines run through a clearing made many years ago, the perfect spot for a little four wheel driving ;)
you could say ..."right in the thick of it"

with the first test out of the way we were well and truly warmed up for what was to come, a steep decent into the gully with "moon rock" up on the opposite ridge, Mick and puggy decided to give the hill climb a crack, we first walked the hill to evaluate it... we placed boards and rocks where we thought they'd be useful to aid in traction and said a few prayers
first up was Mick

Puggy up successfully too! well done mate nice drive

While them two were up top they waited for the rest of us to take another easier route, but we still had to climb back up the hill we just came down

9137
9138

Once again back together as a group Puggy couldn't help himself and had a go at getting up Moon rock, he certainly gave it a red hot crack but that little shorty just couldn't get up it and eventually kind of went up and around it, still very spectacular

the days end was drawing near, and we had to return back to camp as Matt had to still drive home with another 4 hours behind the wheel ahead of him.
parting ways with him everyone was still happy, but quiet for a while, possibly reflecting back on the great day we had and knowing tomorrow was the end and we all had to return home.
The night was cool with cloud cover, which Lawrence took advantage of with his camera

the next morning came all too quickly, one by one we all slowly packed up, said our goodbyes and left.

returning home I had found that coming down a rock step I had actually snagged and bent the front U bolt, luckily during the post trip maintenance I picked that up.

the trip now over and everyone safely back at home, pictures and video were shared, and trust me before the week was over the boys were already making plans for the next trip ;)

the 2025 trip report is soon to be written also, I sure hope you all enjoyed this report! It was bittersweet writing it and looking at all the pictures again.
I'd also like to thank Michael for refreshing my memory occasionally with some of the finer details of this trip, thanks mate.

And finally I'd just like to thank all the boys for making this trip for what it was.

Oh! I forgot to mention if anyone would like to see video footage of this trip, head on over to YouTube and search for "G60 patrol garage"
That's Micks channel, click on the "video" tab and a whole bunch of episodes should come up.

cheers, RED DOG :animals-dogrun:
